Cumberland Hall’s Intensive Outpatient Program
Cumberland Hall IOP provides intensive, consistent, structured treatment. It requires a smaller time commitment than our adult inpatient program and our partial hospitalization program (PHP).
IOP treatments are similar to those in our PHP but require shorter, less frequent sessions. You attend this program three hours per day on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. You can select the morning or afternoon sessions.
Our IOP can serve as a “step-down” program to help you transition from PHP or inpatient care. The program usually takes about three weeks but varies from person to person.
Disorders We Treat in IOP Program
The Cumberland Hall IOP can help with a wide variety of mental health diagnoses, including:
- Anxiety
- Bipolar disorder
- Depression
- Impulsive behavior
- Mental health disorders that cause difficulty in family, social and work settings
- Suicidal ideation or self-harm
During your initial assessment, we listen carefully to your medical and behavioral health history. This helps us understand your challenges, needs and goals. Then we design an individualized treatment plan with specific solutions for recovery.
IOP Treatments
Each IOP session involves three hours of education and therapy. This may include:
- Individual therapy
- Group therapy to build skills such as emotional regulation, coping skills and mindfulness
- Therapy involving one or more members of your family
- Educational sessions on medication adherence, healthy body image, sleep hygiene and other wellness subjects
- Recreational therapy
- Trauma focus groups covering adverse childhood events and adult trauma
- Strategies to overcome addiction behaviors (substance use disorder, food, caffeine, social media) and avoidance behaviors
You also have:
- Weekly meeting with a psychiatrist for medication management
- Weekly meeting with your doctors, nurses and therapists to assess progress and update your treatment plan
Behavioral therapy: CBT and DBT
Our program uses two evidence-based therapeutic models: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Caregivers at Cumberland Hall are extensively trained in both methods.
- CBT helps you identify the ways you think, feel and behave. You then use that awareness to improve your thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
- DBT focuses on building a life worth living, which looks different for every person. It can help people manage even the most challenging mental health disorders.
During one-on-one sessions and group sessions, our staff use CBT and DBT to help teach you the skills and tools you need to:
- Cope with challenging or distressing situations
- Establish healthy boundaries with others
- Improve interpersonal skills and communication to enhance relationships with others
- Improve decision-making skills
- Lessen feelings of depression, anxiety and stress
- Recognize, accept and manage intense emotions and negative thoughts
- Reduce impulsive and self-harming behaviors
- Strengthen confidence, self-worth and self-esteem
Before discharge, we design an individualized plan of care. This helps you on the next step in your journey, adjusting to life after intensive therapy. If you need more intensive care, we can enroll you in our PHP or adult inpatient program.
