Cumberland Hall’s Partial Hospitalization Program
Cumberland Hall PHP offers treatment intensity similar to our inpatient mental health services. But instead of staying overnight at our facility, you attend the program from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. You receive intensive, consistent, structured treatment while having freedom to meet responsibilities at home or work and spend time with family and friends.
Many people find that PHP helps them reduce hospitalizations. They also have reported improved function, like returning to social settings and meaningful life activities and regularly meeting responsibilities, such as paying bills.
Our PHP can serve as a “step-down” program after adult inpatient care. This may help you transition more smoothly back into life after inpatient treatment. The program can also offer a “step up” if you aren’t achieving your goals with less intensive outpatient programs. The program usually takes about three weeks but varies from person to person.

Behavioral therapy: CBT and DBT
Our program uses two evidence-based therapeutic models: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Caregivers at Cumberland Hall are extensively trained in both methods.
- CBT is a form of psychotherapy that helps you identify the ways you think, feel and behave. You then use that awareness to improve your thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
- DBT focuses on building a life worth living, which looks different for every person. It can help people manage even the most challenging mental health disorders.
During one-on-one sessions and group sessions, our staff use CBT and DBT to help teach you the skills and tools you need to:
- Cope with challenging or distressing situations
- Establish healthy boundaries with others
- Improve interpersonal skills and communication to enhance relationships with others
- Improve decision-making skills
- Lessen feelings of depression, anxiety and stress
- Recognize, accept and manage intense emotions and negative thoughts
- Reduce impulsive and self-harming behaviors
- Strengthen confidence, self-worth and self-esteem
Before discharge, we design an individualized plan of care to help you on the next step in your journey. This may involve our intensive outpatient program for continued treatment. If you need more intensive care, we can enroll you in our adult inpatient program.
