Inpatient Mental Health Facility for Adults
Cumberland Hall offers an inpatient program for adults who need a short hospital stay during a mental health crisis. We use evidence-based therapeutic models to stabilize you and help you get on a path to health and healing. Our program offers individual and family therapy, group therapy, recreational therapy, medication management and more — all in a serene, healing environment.
Cumberland Hall’s adult inpatient program is designed for any person 18 or older who needs stabilization from:
- Anxiety or severe social anxiety that severely affects ability to function
- Bipolar disorder
- Chemical dependency
- Major depressive disorder
- Schizophrenia
- Suicidal or homicidal ideas or actions
- Trauma or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Many people have complex mental health needs or more than one mental health challenge at the same time. We can handle even the most challenging cases. Our providers address multiple diagnoses, suicidal thoughts or actions, substance use disorders and aggression.
Our Approach to Behavioral Therapy: CBT and DBT
Our program uses two evidence-based therapeutic models: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Caregivers at Cumberland Hall are extensively trained in both methods.
- CBT is a type of psychotherapy. It helps you identify the ways you think, feel and behave. It enables you to use that awareness to improve your thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
- DBT focuses on building a life worth living, which looks different for every person. It can help people manage even the most challenging mental health disorders.
During one-on-one sessions and group sessions, our staff use CBT and DBT to help teach you the skills and tools you need to:
- Cope with challenging or distressing situations
- Establish healthy boundaries with others
- Improve interpersonal skills and communication to enhance relationships with others
- Improve decision-making skills
- Lessen feelings of depression, anxiety and stress
- Recognize, accept and manage intense emotions and negative thoughts
- Reduce impulsive and self-harming behaviors
- Strengthen confidence, self-worth and self-esteem

- Group therapy to build skills such as emotional regulation, coping skills and mindfulness
- Recreational therapy
- Educational sessions on medication adherence, healthy body image, sleep hygiene and other wellness subjects

- Strategies to overcome addiction behaviors (substance use disorder, food, caffeine, social media) and avoidance behaviors
- Medical detoxification when needed
You also have:
- Regular meetings with a psychiatrist for medication management
- Weekly meeting with your doctors, nurses and therapists to assess progress and update your treatment plan
